4. Objective of the Study
The overarching objective of this study is to identify the personal, social and
economic reasons which cause Sri Lankan women’s involvement into prostitution.
5. The Methodology of the Study
This study is entirely based on qualitative research and it is depended with qualitative
data. Primary data was collected by using tools such as in-depth interviews and
ethnomethodological approach used for the collecting data. Ten female sex workers
who involved with contradictory cohabitee activities from the main purpose of
earning money were selected in non-probability as the sample unit in Matara city
limit. It has to limit only for ten participants because it is a hidden social phenomenon
in the society and for the easiness of collecting data. As the researcher has to identify
places which sex workers frequently walk in the Matara area such as bus stand, beach
side and near the parks. All the participants find with the help of some regular
customers and through observations. All the interviews were conducted in semi
structured manner because it causes to get a in depth understand about the causes of
women’s involvement into prostitution. Six interviews conducted as personal face to
face interviews in Matara beach side and three interviews were conducting in the
restaurants in Matara area according to their consent. Face to face interviews helped
to make a good rapport with the participants and it helps to collect data from their
perspective on prostitution. One interview is a telephone interview and all the
interviews were recorded by using both taking notes and audiovisual recording.
Interviews have been done through the beginning of life stories from their childhood.
The time period for a one interview was taken at about 60- 80 minutes. All the
collected data were analyzed under the emic perspective in thematic content analysis.
In addition to the primary data used some previous research articles and related books
under the secondary data.
