However, digitalisation has disadvantages such as social media addiction,
cybercrime, data theft, job loss, information overload, and a lack of
interpersonal interactions. In rural areas, women are in the earliest stages of
digitalisation and face identity issues. Also, it is widely acknowledged that
new technologies have both positive and negative effects on economic and
social relationships, especially the environment. Yet, without global
communications and the exchange of knowledge, sustainable development
cannot grow (Maclean, Andjelkova, and Vetter, 2007). In this context, ICT
and the Internet are viewed as both opportunities and threats to sustainable
development (CIOCOIU, 2011).
5. Major Research Gaps and Future Research Directions
In this research on digitalisation and poverty, there is a contextual gap. The
literature contains studies about a very small number of nations such as South
Africa, India, Jamaica, and Indonesia. To understand the connection between
and problems with digitalisation better, more research can be done in other
countries. Future research would be beneficial to learn more about the problem
at hand, especially in light of Sri Lanka's economic situation. Some studies
have been carried out in rural areas of various nations. The issue can be
understood in various demographic contexts through future research. A digital
environment can be used to study a citizen's age, education, and related
factors.
