are no highly considerations on over-parenting. In Sri Lankan society with multi-
cultural background, most of the time over parenting could be seen as an issue which
led to negative impact on children So, Main objective of this discussion article is
investigating how over-parenting negatively impact on child’s personality by
understanding main negative consequences of it.
2. Background of the Study
Parenting process can be defined as raising children and providing them with
protection and care in order to ensure their healthy development into adulthood. It
means parenting is supporting children’s healthy and accurate physical,
psychological and social growth from their birth until they become an adult. Parenting
is the process of nurturing, caring for, socializing; preparing one’s children for their
eventual adult roles and that is a universal family experience that spans across the
history of the human family and across every culture in the world (Hammond,
2014:126). And also, according ideas of Hammond (2014:127), Parents serve many
functions that play a crucial role in the society's endurance and success at many levels.
When considering about these functions, first of all parents act as caregivers to their
children by protect, feed, and provide personal care from birth through adulthood.
Then they act as agents of socialization for their children. Socialization is the process
which new members of a society internalize characteristics of their society's norms,
values, attitudes, and behaviors. Parents are the ones who help children to learn about
the society from the beginning and primary socialization that children practiced from
parents are very important for adjusts the children’s personalities.
In here parents teach their children to play successful roles of their own through
example and actions. And also, parent act as the guides for children life by advising,
protecting, encouraging, supporting, making decision for them and managing their
lives until they come to appropriate age. In addition to that parents act as mediators
between their children and the society and finally play advocacy role for gain best
opportunities for their children. In an effort to determine the link between child
outcomes and parenting, researchers have long focused on understanding and
