Complexity of the contemporary society reflects unprecedented structural characteristics and human qualities which significantly affects the way in which different aspects of social structure including social, economic, political and cultural aspects are organized and functioned systematically. Sri Lanka, in particular has become a cultural melting-pot due to its geo political locations which promoted migration either through immigration or emigration. Historically Sri Lankan society has been influenced by a number of different cultural traditions due to constant human mobility with carrying unique cultural values. Sri Lanka thus demonstrates a cultural pluralism despite different groups of people continue to entertain their unique cultural identities. Cultural pluralism sometimes can brings about contestations, and thus giving a proper understanding about parallel cultural existence and cultural relativism to those who are studying for their bachelor’s degree would facilitate mutual understanding among different cultural groups and reconciliation among them. Cultural Center of the University of Ruhuna thus intends to build a good and quality undergraduate with broad world vison beyond narrow views of the world, who in the last would become a cultured citizen contributing to the sustainable development of the country. Moreover, we understand that preserving the national identity of local culture is a responsibility of the university. We broadly understand the plurality of culture would further represents the cultural richness of the country while representing the culture- cognitive stability of Sri Lankans. Broadly Ministry of Cultural Affairs thus strive to conserve Sri Lankan cultural heritage through different means, and in line with those attempts we organize a university specific agenda to improve cultural awareness among students and to involve them in different cultural activities.
