Matara, Sri Lanka
delves into the world of online teaching and learning, examining the
challenges that students with disabilities face when accessing course materials,
participating in discussions, taking assessments, and using digital tools.
Furthermore, the study involves various educational stakeholders, including
students, educators, administrators, and policymakers from Sri Lankan higher
education institutions. These individuals are either directly or indirectly
connected to online teaching and learning. These practices are customised to
suit the distinctive needs of students with disabilities within Sri Lanka's
educational context. The importance of this research lies in its potential to
bridge the accessibility gap in online education, leading to a more inclusive
learning environment in Sri Lanka. By identifying and addressing challenges
faced by students with disabilities, this study contributes to creating a more
accessible online education for a broader range of learners, ensuring equal
educational opportunities.
6. Review of the Relevant Literature
Ongoing challenges are faced by students with disabilities in accessing digital
learning resources, as uncovered by studies from Smith et al. (2019) and Jones
et al. (2020). This leads to the recognition of the importance of universal
design principles and inclusive practices, echoed by scholars like Burgstahler
(2015) and Edyburn (2019), which not only enhance inclusivity for students
with disabilities but also enrich the learning experience for everyone.
