5. Conclusion
In short there is a close relationship between cultural norms and gender
discrimination. Both of them are socially constructed phenomena. The main purpose
of this gender discrimination study is to widen the understanding about how cultural
norms have been influenced for gender discrimination. Initially the article has
focused on what gender discrimination is and the differences between gender and
sex. Then the cultural norms as sources of gender discrimination have being
discussed. Under that, this article has focused on how gender discrimination is
influenced by cultural norms in different social institutions like religion, marriage,
education etc. In this social world we all have some stereotypes about our behavior.
These stereotypes are linked with cultural norms. Because of these cultural norms
and stereotypes, we all have to face some issues based on our gender. Gender
discrimination is not always about women.
Sometimes men also being discriminated. However, growing up as a girl is more
challenging than growing up as a boy in this world. As mentioned above there are
number of reasons to confirm that. Culture and society have an enormous impact on
gender roles. Each day people receive thousands of messages about cultural norms
concerning gender roles, including advertisements, movies, TV, music, magazines
and family influence.
Therefore, people consciously or unconsciously take in this cultural information
about gender roles. However, we can’t directly say whether these cultural beliefs are
good or bad. Cultural norms of a particular society can be considered inappropriate
in another society. Therefore, we can’t judge them. In most societies people believe
their cultural norms as the right things. Any behavior which goes beyond their
socially expected behavior is considered as wrong behavior. As an example, in some
countries, women are expected to cover themselves from head to toe while in others,
bikini, bottoms are allowed. Being discriminated based on gender can’t be accepted.
We all are equal before the law. However, women are traditionally considered to be
gentler, passive, emotional, dependent, patient and communicative than males.
