               ABSTRACT

Emojis and GIFs are powerful tools in digital communication platforms. They replace written texts with visual
elements. This study investigates the impact of emojis and GIFs on emotional expression, interpretation, and

clarity of messages in digital communication. It also explores users’ preference for these elements over written
texts. The research employed a qualitative research approach utilizing open-ended questions. There were 50
participants representing Generation Z and post-Gen Zs. They were virtually interviewed. Samples of real-life

digital communication were collected from the participants and analyzed with their permission. The data were
examined through thematic analysis, which grouped responses into categories such as emotional expression,

clarity of the message, preference for emojis and GIFs, and examples of misinterpretation. By mapping
interview responses with real-world digital communication samples, the study ensured both reliability and
comprehensiveness. The results revealed several key findings. Many participants stated that emojis and GIFs

make messages clearer by adding emotional and contextual signs. For example, “I am fine” can be both
positive and negative depending on the intended meaning of the speaker. By combining it with a smiling emoji,

it indicates a positive tone. The participants preferred GIFs over emojis in conveying complicated emotional
responses as they facilitate animated visual narratives. The majority used emojis or GIFs instead of full
sentences, finding it tedious to type lengthy texts. For example, a kissing emoji is often used instead of typing

“I love you so much.” In addition, the study emphasized that emojis and GIFs can distort the meaning of a
message, resulting in misinterpretations, as a single emoji can carry multiple interpretations. For instance, the
upside-down smiling emoji is used by some users to express uncertainty or sarcasm, whereas others may

interpret it as an indication of friendliness. Despite these challenges, the participants reported continuing to
use these elements for effective and engaging digital interactions. The study contributes to a better
understanding of how visual symbols modify language in digital contexts by abridging complex emotions and

contextual cues into succinct, universally recognized forms that improve expression.
