To analyze the role of political awareness, party affiliation, and local political
actors in influencing the voting behavior.
Methodology
This research is conducted under a qualitative research approach. The main
objective of the research is to investigate the voting patterns of women in
estate communities during the election period, their behavior patterns, and
the social, cultural, economic, and political factors that affect it. The reason
for choosing a qualitative research approach is that these issues cannot be
fully captured by numerical data as they belong to a number of social and
cultural backlashes, ideologies, and political influences. This allows the
research to critically understand the experiences, ideas and feelings of
women.
The study area was selected as the Hulandawa Estate in the Akuressa area.
The reason for choosing this area was that it was a place where the lifestyles
and political coordination of estate communities in Sri Lanka could be
observed. Since women‘s political participation among estate communities is
shaped by social and cultural boundaries, this area can be considered a
representative site.
Purposive sampling was used in selecting the sample method. That is,
selecting people who directly contribute to the purpose of the research. Here,
35 participants who have experience in voting and who participate directly
during the election period were selected for the sample size. While choosing
this sample size, the aim of obtaining a deep understanding of qualitative
research was taken into account, and special attention was paid to including
women who can obtain information directly and in depth.
The data collection methods were prescribed to use detailed in-depth
interviews, observations, and focus group discussions. In-depth interviews
capture the experiences, opinions, responses, and feelings of individuals in
detail, while observations allow information to be collected about their living
behaviors and political environment. Focus group discussions examine the
group opinions, criticisms, and agreement or opposition of women, which
also helps to identify social influences.
