Impact of AI Exposure on the Development of English Language Skills: A Single-Participant Case Study-Based Investigation
S.G.S. Samaraweera
Abstract
Developing English language skills in ESL learners is a long-experienced challenge for teachers and the learners. In this scenario, consistent interaction with artificial intelligence (AI) tools capable of orchestrating authentic interactions with the language is found to be useful in facilitating learners to acquire and master of English language skills. Such tools have the potential to create opportunities for learners to achieve personalised and interactive learning experiences, enable teachers to provide individualised feedback, and open avant-garde adaptive pathways for learning. Additionally, they may promote learners’ motivation, encourage their active participation, and engage them in self-directed learning procedures. Therefore, this exploratory single-participant case study aims to investigate whether exposure to AI has a positive impact on developing English language skills. The data were collected using a qualitative case study focused on an academic in a public university in Sri Lanka. The data collection methods included semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and observations. The results obtained during the action research and empirical study indicated that consistent interaction with AI tools facilitates the acquisition of English language skills and enables individuals to use them confidently in authentic situations.
